Common Types of Anxiety We Treat:

Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are certainly common to all of us. However, when your anxiety increases to the point where it is affecting your daily life, it is time to get help. You may have been struggling with anxiety throughout your life (excessive worrying, panic attacks) or perhaps your anxiety has come on quickly as a result of a more sudden change or hardship in your life, such as the birth of a child, death of a loved one, job loss, school failure, car accident, etc. People who have not experienced your level of anxiety may not understand how difficult it is to live with anxiety and may give you suggestions such as “it will get better”, “you will be ok”, or “just suck it up”. However, if you have anxiety, you know that these suggestions, although well intended, are not helpful. We understand exactly what you are going through and you are not alone. Decades of research on anxiety have proven that anxiety is a result of chemical imbalances in the brain. Using the most widely-used, empirically-based treatment called Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we have proven techniques that work (often without medication) to reduce anxiety so that it is no longer negatively impacting your life. Treatment is often short-term and immediately effective.

There is no reason to wait to schedule an initial consultation appointment with one of our experts to see if Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is the solution to you leading a happier and more content life. We have specialized in assessing and successfully treating anxiety for many decades. Our doctors stay on top of the leading research in anxiety through our direct affiliation with universities, who are on the front lines of the newest and most effective treatments for anxiety.

Excessive Worrying

Worrying about things is as common as breathing. However, if you are finding that your worrying is excessive or you are worrying about things more than usual, it is time to get help. You may have always been a “worrier”, but perhaps something has changed in your life to cause it to increase. Things such as hormonal changes, major life transitions such as moving or job change, the birth of a child, death of a loved one, recent tragic news events or an accident can cause anxiety to increase.

Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety is the fear or apprehension of interacting with other people leading you to feel self-consciousness in social situations. You may feel as though you are being negatively judged and evaluated or that people are talking about you behind your back. You may feel excessively embarrassed, inferior, inadequate, humiliated, lonely and depressed. You often avoid or withdraw from social situations when in fact you want more than anything to be able to socialize with others and fit in.

As alone as you may feel when suffering from this condition, you are definitely not alone. Social anxiety is very common and we can help. By using empirically-validated treatment approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness approaches, your anxiety reduces in social situations. As a result, you become more relaxed and confident. You will find that you are able to speak to others just as well as you do when talking to a close family member or friend. You will have more friends and feel happier and content.

OCD

All people worry. However, you may notice that you can't stop worrying and your worries frequently cause you to do certain things repeatedly in order to get rid of the worrying thoughts. These rituals or compulsions ( such as frequent hand washing, checking, touching objects in a repetitive fashion, focus on evenness, etc. ) stop the scary thoughts and help you to feel safe, clean or okay in some way.

Your attempts to stop these behaviors may not be working or you may not know why you are engaging in these behaviors. Perhaps you try to hide these rituals, but those close to you are starting to notice and become concerned. We specialize in anxiety and in particular, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. After a brief consultation, we will be able to tell you if the difficulties you are experiencing are something that will pass or if it is something more serious that can cause further difficulties if not treated. Anxiety and OCD are genetically inherited much like eye or hair color. If anxiety or OCD runs in your family, this is even more reason to address it as early as possible. Our clinicians at McCaskill Family Services specialize in the most empirically-effective treatment for OCD, known as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy ( CBT ) including exposure and response prevention techniques. Through our extensive training and experience using this treatment approach, you will learn strategies in a caring, supportive environment to effectively manage your symptoms of anxiety.

Stress Management

Stress is part of everyone’s daily life. If you are experiencing stress, it simply means that the demands of the current situation are not matching what you are reasonably able to handle at this time. Although stress is normal, chronic stress can result in cognitive impairment such as memory loss, poor concentration and focus and medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

If you are looking for some help with stress management, you have come to the right place. We will work with you to develop an individualized stress management plan and will teach you specific, highly-effective techniques to reduce your stress. All of our strategies are based on research from top universities and medical centers. You will feel better and will be much more effective and efficient in your work and daily life activities. We are well-known for effectively teaching stress-management techniques to local CEOs, physicians, attorneys, politicians and elite athletes on teams such as the Tigers, Lions and Pistons.

Divorce

If you are going through a separation or divorce, you may feel overwhelmed, confused and alone. Perhaps it was your decision after years of feeling unhappy and trapped in a marriage that wasn’t working. Maybe your partner has decided to leave or has had an affair and found someone else. If you have children, it is even more complicated and upsetting as you try to navigate your way through this, all while trying to protect them.

The divorce rate is estimated to be over 60%, so you are not at all alone and are actually part of the majority. We have been working with couples for decades in all phases of considering separation, to filing for divorce, to post-divorce care. Emotions are high and coming to an agreement on things, especially as it relates to the children, often seems impossible. We are here to help.

Common Types of Depression We Treat

Depression

If you are experiencing symptoms of sadness, crying more than usual, hopelessness, low energy, decreased interest in things you used to enjoy, appetite or sleep changes, irritability or just a general sense of the blues, you may be suffering from depression. Depression can be a lifelong struggle or can be triggered by an event such as the loss of a loved one, job loss, breaking-up with someone, separation or divorce.

You are not alone and we can definitely help. Depression is more common that you might think, and most people suffer through at least one episode during the course of their life. Advances in treatment have made it possible for people like you who may suffer from depression to live happier, more content and well-balanced lives. We specialize in the most empirically-established treatment for depression, called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). First, you will meet with one of our clinicians to discuss your situation in a confidential, comfortable setting. We teach you techniques proven to work and (if you do your minimal homework), most treatment can be completed by meeting once a week with your therapist for about 8 – 12 sessions, although it varies by individual. We specialize in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), the most well-established, proven method to treat depression.

Grief and Loss

Losing someone you love can be devastatingly painful. Losing your mother, father, sister, brother, daughter, son, spouse, partner, best friend or pet hurts so badly. You want to speak to them or hold them one more time and you can’t. You may have regrets for things you said or didn’t say. Grief can also come in the form of a relationship ending, losing your job, your house, or your physical abilities due to an injury.

You may feel like the pain is too much to handle and you cannot go on. We often describe grief as the most intense physical pain you have ever experienced without the option to go the emergency room for pain relief medication. You are not alone and we can help you. The most important step that you can take right now is to make that first appointment and allow us to get you through this so that the pain becomes more manageable and you can begin to function better. Through empirically-proven treatments such as mindfulness, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and interpersonal therapy, you will feel better and get some relief.

Losing a parent is a sign of the loss of your childhood and the realization that you are now “officially” an adult and no longer a “child”. Self-esteem is your overall opinion of yourself and self-confidence is your trust in your own abilities, qualities and judgment. If you are suffering from low self-esteem or low self-confidence, you may be insecure, underachieving, unhappy, unmotivated, angry, withdrawn, and/or have a poor self-image. You may have a fear of making mistakes and therefore are not working to your highest potential.

Low self-esteem/self-confidence can lead to relationship problems, underachieving at work or at school, depression and anxiety. Self-esteem and self-confidence are on a continuum that can fluctuate at different times in your life, with the goal of trying to keep it balanced in the middle, not too high and not too low.

Many people suffer from low self-esteem/self-confidence. You are not alone. Fortunately, individual therapy is highly effective for these conditions. With advances in treatment approaches using components of Cognitive-Behavioral, interpersonal and Dialectical Behavioral treatment, you do not have to suffer any longer. Types of Health Conditions We Treat

ADHD

ADHD in adults is often unidentified or misdiagnosed; please do not rely on questionnaires administered by your physician. Many symptoms of ADHD such as distractibility, hyperactivity, disorganization, absentmindedness or forgetfulness can actually be symptoms of another disorder such as a learning disability, anxiety or depression. We conduct comprehensive evaluations in order to make sure that these symptoms are actually the result of the neurological condition of ADHD. Treating ADHD when it is not ADHD can be harmful to you. On the other hand, not treating ADHD because you didn’t know you had it is also harmful. Just because you can pay attention, sit still and can organize your belongings does not mean that you do not have ADHD. If someone in your family has ADHD (or suspected ADHD), it is even more important get an evaluation since ADHD is hereditary and runs in families. We will conduct a very thorough neuropsychological evaluation in order to determine if you have ADHD and we will tell you exactly what to do. We specialize in ADHD assessment and treatment (without medication). If it is not ADHD, the evaluation with determine what is going on and provide you with a detailed plan on how to improve your situation.

ADHD is one of our primary specializations at MFS. We have extensive training directly from experts across the country and bring this to you. We have spent decades on the cutting edge of advancements in the field of ADHD. Dr. McCaskill is the professional advisor for ChADD, a national organization for research and treatment of ADHD in children and adults.

Eating Disorder

If you or someone you know thinks you may be suffering from an eating disorder, it is crucial that you get help immediately. The longer that it goes untreated, the more difficult it is to treat on an outpatient basis and may lead to hospitalization. Restricting your food intake resulting in being underweight, an intense fear of gaining weight, excessive focus on body image and inability to recognize the severity of the situation are common symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa. Binge Eating Disorder involves episodes of consuming very large amounts of food with a feeling of being out of control followed by intense feelings of guilt and shame. Bulimia Nervosa is similar to Binge Eating Disorder, although attempts are made to prevent weight gain by vomiting or other methods.

Eating disorders are quite common; however, because the person affected by the condition is often not able to see how serious it is, it is often a loved one who prompts them to get help. If you are reading this and you are concerned about someone with a potential eating disorder, we can help you. If you are not able to get the person to agree to come to an initial consultation appointment with us, it is perfectly ok and advisable that you come in yourself. We will help you to know what to do next.

Weight Loss

Why is it so difficult to lose weight and keep it off? You are a successful, strong, motivated person, yet time and time again your attempts at losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight have failed. Diet after diet, you know them all at this point and have probably tried most: Weight Watchers, Atkins, South Beach, Paleo and the list goes on.

The reason over 75% of people trying to lose weight are not successful is because a key part of any behavioral change, including weight loss, is that we believe we have more control over our behavior than we really do. Stress, depression, anxiety and addiction take control of our actions in a very powerful way. You are not an unmotivated, lazy person. Our behavioral psychologists have helped hundreds of people like yourself lose weight and keep it off by treating the core brain components preventing you from losing weight and keeping it off.
